Around 100 high school students and teachers from Jakarta took part in an active workshop on Newspaper in Education (NIE) at the Jakarta International Convention Center (JICC) on Thursday.

The workshop, organized jointly by The Jakarta Post Foundation and ExxonMobil in conjunction with the 32nd Indonesian Petroleum Association (IPA), discussed topical oil and gas issues.

Foundation executive director Yulia Herawait told students and teachers that the workshop was aimed at teaching them how to use newspapers in the classroom.

"A newspaper is a living textbook. It contains so many issues -- social and economic, among others."

The workshop discussed oil and gas because it is a very important issue, she said.

"We, the modern people, heavily rely on oil and gas. We use them everyday for fueling our cars and motorcycles, for cooking, cosmetics, medicines and various other useful products."

The students and teachers were from SMAN 21, SMA Al Izard, LaGuardia, SMA Santa Laurent, SMA Lab school Rawamangun, SMAN 70 and SMA Madania.

Before the workshop started, students and teachers were invited to attend a session by ExxonMobil on how to produce oil and gas. This was followed by series of games.

Deva Rachman, ExxonMobil public affairs manager, expected the workshop to encourage students to learn more about the energy sector.

"We are very happy to support a program that gives students so many opportunities to gain more information and knowledge on this issue," she said.

During the three-hour workshops, students and teachers were involved in various activities such as creating front pages of newspapers.

The workshop is part of The Jakarta Post Foundation's partnership program with the business community to make newspapers a learning tool in schools around the country.

The Jakarta Post established the education foundation to overview its Newspaper in Education (NIE) program, which brings together the newspaper industry, the business community, organizations and individuals to improve reading literacy among students.
